A red dot or badge count that won't clear, even though you've read every message in every channel, isn't a real unread — it's a sync mismatch between Slack's client and its servers. It's also one of the few Slack problems with a genuinely instant fix.

The fast fix: Shift + Esc

This is Slack's own built-in "mark everything as read" shortcut, and it's the single most effective fix for a phantom badge. With the Slack desktop app focused, press Shift + Esc. A confirmation prompt appears — select Yes, clear all and every unread count resets, including ones the interface wasn't visibly showing you.

If that doesn't work, force a cache refresh

Slack's badge count is a locally cached number that can drift out of sync with what the server actually knows is read. Two ways to force it back in sync:

• Hard refresh: Ctrl + Shift + R (Windows) or Cmd + Shift + R (Mac) reloads Slack's client state without restarting the whole app.

Try it on mobile

Sometimes a thread update syncs to your phone but not your desktop (or the reverse). Opening the Slack mobile app and scrolling through your channels and DMs re-syncs the read state across devices, and this alone clears a stuck desktop badge more often than you'd expect.

Turn the badge off entirely

If you'd rather not deal with this at all, you can disable the badge at the OS level (Slack itself has no in-app toggle for it):
